Created in 1978 by Tomohiro Nishikado for Taito, Space Invaders is one of the most recognized and influential video games in history. Released in Japanese arcades in July 1978 and in the United States in 1980, it became a global cultural phenomenon within months — to the point of causing a shortage of 100-yen coins in Japan, such was the demand. Its rows of pixelated aliens and defensive spaceship are today icons of pop culture on a par with Mickey Mouse or Superman. The original game has spawned more than 20 official sequels and generated several billion dollars in revenue over four decades, laying the foundations of the scrolling shooter genre and inspiring an entire generation of developers.
Arcade cabinets hold a central place in the collective memory of the 1980s: arcades, cafés, shopping malls — the upright joystick cabinet defined an entire generation of players. As arcades gradually disappeared during the 1990s and 2000s in the face of rising home consoles, these machines became highly sought-after nostalgic objects. Today, specialist manufacturers such as Arcade Vintage carry on this format by integrating modern technologies — multi-game emulation, HD screens, Pandora Box systems — to deliver the authentic experience of the golden age of arcade gaming in a new and reliable format.
