This Acorn green Hollywood Candy Machine is an authentic American-made sweet vending machine produced by Acorn, the long-standing market leader, designed specifically to sell ‘Hollywood’ chewing gum in public places — railway stations, grocery shops, hairdressers, cinemas — during the 1950s. Standing 40 cm tall, it features the classic design of mechanical dispensers from that era: a sturdy square base made of metal painted bright green, symbolising the Hollywood brand with a restored paint finish in period colours. The upper section opens to reveal a clear glass sphere, allowing customers to see the multicoloured sweets inside. The payment system — a vintage mechanical coin mechanism made of brass and steel — is still in working order: inserting a coin activates the dispensing mechanism. The distinctive markings of the Acorn brand — in the shape of an acorn, symbolising the name — are clearly visible on the body, reflecting the manufacturer’s visual identity. The whole piece exudes the commercial optimism and pragmatic engineering of 1950s America.
This example is in impeccable collector’s condition: the green-painted metal body retains its shine with no significant paint chips, reflecting a respectful period restoration. The glass globe is intact, with no cracks or warping. The mechanical coin mechanism operates smoothly, indicating regular maintenance. The piece is remarkably complete: all original mechanical parts, all compartment seals and all iconic markings are present. This overall condition — for a dispenser over 70 years old that has seen public service — is testament to exemplary preservation and restoration.
This Acorn green Hollywood Candy Machine is aimed at collectors of vintage sweet vending machines, enthusiasts of 1950s American industrial design, lovers of vintage advertising and 20th-century memorabilia, and interior designers specialising in retro-Americana style. Authentic Acorn vending machines from this era, in such good condition and with a working coin mechanism, are rare and highly sought-after acquisitions. Today, these machines evoke the golden age of American retail, a time when every sale was a direct, tactile transaction in the public urban space.

The Acorn brand, founded in the United States in the early 20th century, became one of the leading manufacturers of mechanical candy dispensers. The year 1950 marks the peak of vending machine technology of the era: reliable coin mechanisms, simple yet robust engineering, and clean functional design. The “Hollywood” chewing gum — a mass-market commercial product — benefited from a large-scale distribution campaign through automatic dispensers. These machines became ubiquitous features of the American urban landscape, installed on every street corner, in every station concourse, in every grocery store. The bright green chosen for the dispenser was a marketing decision intended to catch the eye of children and consumers in search of a sweet treat.
The 1950s represent the golden age of vending machine culture in the United States, before the rise of the supermarket and modern mass retail. These machines embodied a decentralized, accessible form of commerce that captured the optimism of post-war America. With the decline of bulk candy sales and the modernization of retail outlets, most Acorn dispensers were withdrawn from service from the 1970s and 1980s onward. Today, well-preserved examples stand as valuable testimonies to the history of American retail, nostalgic objects and significant pieces of 20th-century utilitarian industrial design.
