This American-made SUN peanut vending machine, dating from 1960, features a compact, trapezoidal base topped by a glass display case with chrome uprights. The metal parts have been restored in a vibrant vintage US green, which contrasts with the red and gold ‘5¢’ label visible inside the display case. It is fitted with an original lever-operated coin mechanism, a chrome dispensing flap and a catch tray integrated into the base.
The machine is complete and in immaculate condition, featuring its original coin mechanism, on which the ‘Los Angeles’ markings remain clearly visible. The chrome surfaces are shiny, the paintwork is even and the glass panels show no major damage. A SUN vending machine restored with such period-accurate attention to detail is a rare American piece, particularly sought after by collectors.
This SUN peanut vending machine will appeal to collectors of American vending machines and coin-operated machines, as well as enthusiasts of vintage bar, diner or kitchen décor. Countertop vending machines complete with their original mechanisms, in such a good state of preservation, are now hard to find on the American vintage market.

In post-war America, automatic confectionery and peanut dispensers filled the counters of bars, drugstores, pool halls, and train stations. For a coin worth a few cents, the customer received a handful of treats — a gesture that became a familiar part of everyday American life. These machines, designed to be robust and easy to restock, were produced by numerous small regional manufacturers, particularly in California.
Machines manufactured in Los Angeles reflect the industrial growth of the American West Coast in the mid-20th century, with simple lever mechanisms, enameled sheet metal bodies, and glass fronts designed to display the appeal of the product. Today, these restored counter-top dispensers have become prized collector’s objects, witnesses to the commercial culture and utilitarian aesthetic of American bars of the 1950s and 1960s.
