Antique beam balance pharmacy 60 cm, solid brass

4,9 – 175 avis
This Antique beam balance solid brass is a piece of pharmacy or apothecary equipment, approximately 60 cm high. It consists of a vertical central column mounted on a curved base with three supports, a horizontal swinging beam ending in spikes, and two circular brass pans suspended by fine chains. A locking mechanism and a pointer sit atop the column, allowing for precise adjustment of the beam.
The balance retains its original patina and is in very good condition: the brass has retained its deep golden sheen, the chains and pans are original, and the whole remains well-balanced. A balance of this quality, complete with its two pans and chains, has become rare, as such pieces have often lost parts over time.
This antique beam balance is ideal for collectors of scientific instruments and antique pharmacy items, enthusiasts of cabinets of curiosities, and interior designers seeking an elegant and symbolic piece for a study, kitchen, library or display cabinet. It fits naturally into a characterful interior, where it adds a touch of heritage and refinement.

The beam balance is one of humanity’s oldest measuring instruments: based on the principle of equilibrium between two pans, it was used from Antiquity onwards to weigh goods, precious metals and medicines. In the 19th century and early 20th century, precision brass balances became essential in pharmacists’ dispensaries and laboratories, where the accurate weighing of substances was a matter of safety.
Apothecaries and pharmacists of the time prepared most medicines themselves, measuring powders and plant matter to the nearest gram. With the industrialisation of pharmacy and the arrival of electronic scales, these instruments disappeared from countertops — but their refined aesthetic and their symbolism of balance and justice make them today highly appreciated collector’s and decorative objects, particularly in the world of curiosity cabinets.
Antique beam balance solid brass, in the apothecary or pharmacy style of the early 20th century, with a horizontal oscillating beam and two circular pans suspended by fine chains. Original patina, in very good condition.
