This antique candlestick telephone, also known as a ‘column’ telephone, is a historic model manufactured in France by the Compagnie Française Thomson-Houston, whose markings are clearly visible on the handset and the base. It comprises a brass column supporting the handset suspended from its hook, a separate earpiece and a rotary Bakelite dial bearing the list of emergency numbers from that era. The whole unit rests on a circular metal base, lined with felt, in the purest Art Deco style.
The telephone is complete and in impeccable condition, with no restoration whatsoever: it retains its magnificent original patina, in its natural state, with the warm sheen of aged brass and the soft lustre of Bakelite. An authentic, complete candlestick telephone from this period, with perfectly legible manufacturer’s markings, is a rare find in such a state of preservation.
This antique candlestick telephone will appeal to collectors of vintage telephones and historical communication equipment, enthusiasts of Art Deco décor, and interior designers seeking a piece with character for an office, a library or a display cabinet. Original, unrestored candlestick telephones with their patina intact are particularly prized by connoisseurs.

Founded in France in the early 20th century, the Compagnie Française Thomson-Houston (CFTH) was the French subsidiary of the American Thomson-Houston Electric Company, specializing in electrical equipment and telecommunications hardware. It supplied the Posts, Telegraphs and Telephones administration with telephone sets, contributing to the progressive equipping of the French network during the interwar period.
The so-called “candlestick” or “column” telephones established themselves during this period as the reference model, with their vertical column carrying the microphone, their handset suspended from a hook, and — from the 1920s onward — their rotary dial enabling automatic dialing. These Art Deco-designed devices, now sought-after collector’s objects, bear witness to the beginnings of modern telephony and to the French industrial aesthetic of the 1910s to 1930s.
