This Abbey MFG dispenser is an American 5-cent countertop dispenser manufactured by Abbey Mfg. Co. of St. Louis, Missouri. Dating from the late 1940s or early 1950s, it consists of a blown glass globe resting on a chrome-plated aluminium body in the characteristic style of the period. The original label on the globe reads "Fresh! For Full Measure - Agitate Lever" and the price of 5 cents. The "Jiggle Slide" dispensing mechanism is intact.

The coin is mounted on a large original aluminium disc that gives it its characteristic silhouette and stability suitable for bar counters. The period patina is uniform throughout the structure, with no recent retouching or intervention. The globe still contains coloured candies, contributing to the overall visual appearance of the piece.

This Abbey MFG dispenser is a rare collector's item presented complete, with no missing parts. It will appeal to collectors of Americana and counter-top advertising, as well as fans of retro, loft or vintage American décor looking to incorporate an authentic and functional object into their space.

American countertop dispensers experienced their golden age between the 1930s and 1950s. Found in drugstores, bars, barbershops and grocery stores, they dispensed chewing gum, candy or peanuts for just a few cents. Their manufacture, carried out by companies such as Northwestern, Masters, Advance and Abbey, was based on an assembly of moulded glass and chromed metal, with simple and robust dispensing mechanisms designed for intensive use.

These objects, ubiquitous in the American commercial landscape of the post-war years, gradually disappeared from countertops during the 1960s and 1970s, replaced by less durable plastic models. Examples in aluminium and glass from the 1940-1950 period, complete with their original mechanism and period label, are today sought-after collector’s pieces. They embody a facet of American popular culture, at the intersection of industrial design and the everyday life of a bygone era.
