This giant Playmobil Santa Claus is an official figure produced in 1990 by Playmobil in Germany under licence, designed to represent Father Christmas within the brand’s festive universe. Standing 160 cm tall, it faithfully recreates the iconic figure of Father Christmas. The costume features the character’s traditional colours: a bright, vivid red jacket, white trim at the cuffs and collar, and a black belt with a central gold buckle reminiscent of Santa’s famous ‘belt buckle’. His legs are clad in red trousers and black boots, creating an imposing and instantly recognisable silhouette. The face is characteristic of Playmobil: a pale pink complexion, expressive round black eyes and a benevolent smile. The full white beard — a detachable piece from the era — frames the face with remarkable authenticity. The red hat with a white brim completes the festive ensemble. The figure exudes an atmosphere of joy, generosity and winter magic.

Playmobil, founded in 1974, began developing seasonal themed figures early on, including Father Christmas figures to accompany the festive season. The Playmobil Father Christmas became a fixture in children’s collections every December. In 1990, at the peak of Playmobil’s popularity, the brand produced a very limited series of oversized figures to animate the windows of premium toy stores and end-of-year festive events. The oversized Father Christmas was at the heart of this promotional range, embodying the Christmas spirit and the Playmobil aesthetic. These figures, never made available to the general public, remained exclusively reserved for Playmobil’s commercial partners.
The 1990s mark a transition in Playmobil’s history: the brand consolidated its status as a global icon of educational toys. The oversized figures of this period reflect an unquestionable standard of German manufacturing and a notable attention to detail. Unlike later generations, the 1990 Father Christmas figures feature beards and accessories produced with greater robustness and authenticity. As oversized figures were progressively phased out of the Playmobil range during the 2000s and 2010s, well-preserved 1990 examples quickly became difficult to find. Today, more than 30 years after its manufacture, this oversized Father Christmas represents a tangible fragment of Playmobil history and of the festive culture of the 1990s.
