This 1983 Skyway Original BMX is an iconic freestyle bike, produced by Skyway Industries in the United States under the TotalAéro brand, with an extremely limited production run of just two years: 1983 and 1984. This absolute rarity immediately sets this bike apart. The frame and fork feature the characteristic teardrop-shaped aerodynamic profile, constructed entirely from Cro-Mo (chromium-molybdenum) for superior lightness and unrivalled durability. The rounded brake bridge — a distinctive feature of the 1983 models — is present, identifying this bike as one of the final 1983 editions. The black Skyway 4-spoke rims with a gold-brown stripe are its unmistakable visual signature. All components are entirely original: the renowned Japanese Dia-Compe braking system, the chain and sprockets, the vintage Tioga Comp 3 tyres from Japan, the contoured Skyway Cro-Mo seatpost and handlebars, and the mirror-chrome TUFF NECK stem manufactured in the USA. The REDLINE Flight 401 (USA) with a 44T chainring, the Suntour 16T freewheel, the Haro (USA) platform pedals, the ÂME (USA) grips — every component reflects high-end specifications and a rigorous selection of premium parts. The Japanese Kashimax saddle, Tange MX 320 bearings and Skyway brake pads complete this legendary build.

This example is preserved in collector’s condition: all period components are intact and original, with no substitutions or modernisations. The Cro-Mo frame shows no cracks, corrosion or structural deformation. The rims remain true and fully functional. The braking and steering mechanisms retain their original smoothness. This total integrity — where every part has been verified as original — is extraordinarily rare for a vintage BMX that is over 40 years old. The aerodynamic number plate is present and legible, confirming the model’s authenticity.

This 1983 Skyway Original BMX is one of the most prestigious acquisitions on the vintage collectible BMX market. BMX purists specifically seek out 1983 TotalAéro models with a rounded brake bridge, American-made and full Cro-Mo. Examples with all original components — in particular the REDLINE Flight 401 crankset and the intact Skyway rims — are extremely hard to find. This bike, beyond its status as a vintage ride, represents a collector’s investment recognised by the world’s leading collectors of 1980s freestyle BMX.

Skyway Industries, founded in 1979 in California, revolutionized BMX technology by inventing the “Mag-Wheels” in 1982 — four-spoke aerodynamic cast aluminum rims, light and rigid, which instantly became the reference equipment for professional and amateur freestyle BMX riders alike. The TotalAero line (1983–1984) represents the peak of Skyway technology, offering a full Cro-Mo construction with aerodynamically profiled frame and fork, paired with the best components available at the time: REDLINE, Dia-Compe, Kashimax, Tange. Production was deliberately limited, giving each machine the character of a specialized piece. The 1983 models, featuring the distinctive rounded brake bridge, have become the most sought-after among collectors, marking both the apex and the close of a golden era in high-precision American BMX manufacturing.

1983 is regarded as the peak year of freestyle BMX: the discipline reached its commercial and creative high point in the United States, with major competitions, demonstration videos circulating on television channels, and explosive demand for professional-grade machines. The most talented riders piloted Skyway TotalAero 1983 BMX bikes, contributing to the mythology surrounding these machines. After 1984, Skyway discontinued the TotalAero line and the models changed, making the 1983–84 examples irreplaceable. Today, more than 40 years after their manufacture, Skyway TotalAero 1983 BMX bikes with complete period specification represent one of the most significant acquisitions in the heritage of worldwide freestyle BMX.

1983 Skyway Original BMX, TotalAéro model produced in 1983–84 only. Made in the USA, full Cro-Mo (chrome-molybdenum), signature Skyway rims. All original components: REDLINE Flight 401 crankset, Dia-Compe brake, Kashimax saddle, Tioga Comp 3 tyres. Rounded brake bridge (late 1983 edition). An exceptional piece for purist BMX collectors.
