This French-made Bayard Street Fountain, produced in Lyon in 1920, is an authentic piece of cast-steel street furniture. Its cylindrical, fluted column rests on a circular plinth and features a relief plaque at the front reading ‘Fire hydrant’, surmounted by a laurel wreath and a swan-neck spout. The ‘Bayard Lyon’ manufacturer’s plate is located at the base of the shaft, and all the original markings are cast into the metal. The fountain was operated by the rotating handle situated at the top.

The piece features a beautiful graphite finish which highlights the reliefs in the cast iron and brings out the detail of the ornamentation, without any alteration to the markings or the structure. An example of this quality, complete and with all its markings legible in the cast, is particularly rare on the market for antique street furniture.

This Bayard street fountain is aimed at collectors of antique street furniture, enthusiasts of cast iron art and Lyon’s industrial heritage, as well as interior designers and landscape architects seeking a striking piece for a garden, courtyard, terrace or industrial-style interior. Authentic Bayard fountains in such good condition are becoming increasingly rare.

At the turn of the 20th century, French cities equipped themselves extensively with cast iron standpipes, watering points, and fire hydrants, as drinking water networks expanded and public hygiene became a municipal priority. Lyon, a major industrial and metallurgical city, was home to several foundries specializing in this urban street furniture, including the Bayard firm, which supplied fountains and hydraulic equipment to numerous French municipalities.

These cast iron street fountains, both functional and carefully detailed in their decoration, were part of the everyday landscape of squares and streets, providing drinking water to residents and a water supply for firefighting. Today, these pieces removed from public spaces have become sought-after collector’s objects, bearing witness to the foundry expertise of Lyon and to the utilitarian aesthetic of French urban planning in the first half of the 20th century.

Bayard Street Fountain, made in Lyon, France, in 1920; a collectable piece of urban décor in cast steel, featuring all its original markings cast into the metal. Operated by a rotating handle; a rare model with a graphite finish.
