This Paris post office box is a collector's item produced by Picard, Sauerbach & Cie, E.C.P. engineers, based on rue de Tanger in the 19th arrondissement. The company held the official concession to manufacture letterboxes for the French postal administration between 1940 and 1949.
The item is in its original condition, with an authentic patina, a functional lifting flap, and the lock and mechanism intact. The front of the box bears the embossed lettering typical of the period - "Boite aux Lettres" ("Letter Box") and the words "Ne jeter dans cette boite ni lettres pour la localité, ni journaux ni imprimés" ("Do not throw in this box any letters for the locality, newspapers or printed matter") - testifying to the care taken with postal regulations at the time.
Made from steel, this wall-mounted box with carrying handle retains all its original features. A decorative object with a strong character, equally suited to an industrial interior, an office space or the entrance to a house.
