Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent, famous for his neo‑expressionist paintings. Self‑taught, he began by creating graffiti under the pseudonym “SAMO” in New York before becoming a central figure in the 1980s art scene. His work blends social, political and cultural themes, addressing issues such as racial identity, injustice and consumer society. With a raw, energetic style, he incorporated words, symbols and abstract motifs. Today, he is recognised as one of the most influential contemporary artists of the 20th century.
