This enamelled Paris Metro plaque is an authentic example of mid-twentieth-century urban signage. Measuring an imposing 100cm by 40cm, it features the characteristic "METRO" lettering in white on a deep royal blue background, underlined by a directional arrow. The signature "Email Ed. JEAN" on the bottom right certifies that it comes from a historic manufacturer that supplied the RATP with its durable underground signage.
The object is in a remarkable state of conservation, preserving a surface shine and colour saturation faithful to its original appearance. The quality of the enamelling, dense and lustrous, bears witness to the demanding industrial manufacturing processes of the time, designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the tunnels. A few minute traces of use may remain, attesting to its life in situ without altering the legibility or overall aesthetics of the piece.
Integrating this enamelled Paris Metro plaque into an interior space adds an immediate architectural and historical dimension. A quintessential industrial decorative element, it embodies the graphic rigour and functionality of post-war French public design, and is perfectly suited to loft-style interiors or collections dedicated to railway heritage.

The Parisian metro of the 1950s underwent a pivotal period of modernization and reconstruction in the aftermath of the war. While the RATP, created a few years earlier, began introducing the first rubber-tired trains to cope with increasing traffic, signage played a crucial role in guiding the growing flows of travelers. The visual identity had to be efficient, legible, and indestructible.
Manufacturers like Émaillerie Jean used high-temperature vitrification techniques to produce these signage panels, guaranteeing their resistance to the humidity and dust of the underground network. These objects, formerly purely functional, have become strong cultural markers, evoking the unique atmosphere of Parisian platforms, the beveled ceramic tiles, and the effervescence of the capital during the Trente Glorieuses.
