This fossilised mammoth tusk is an exceptional piece of natural history, dating from the Quaternary era. Measuring around 50 cm in length, it comes from a specimen of Mammuthus primigenius, the legendary woolly mammoth of the Eurasian steppes. Presented in its raw, unpolished state, it reveals a fascinating surface texture, marked by the millennia and extreme climatic conditions of its burial.

Fossilisation has given the ivory a unique patina, combining brown and grey tones. On one of the sides, dendritic crystalline structures are clearly visible, testifying to the slow mineralogical processes that transformed the organic matter over two million years. The natural cracks and the partially hollow section at the end tell of the authenticity of this object, far removed from synthetic reproductions.

Installed on a minimalist glass base that emphasises its curvature, this mammoth tusk becomes a major object of contemplation. It is a noble addition to a modern cabinet of curiosities or an interior that collects rare pieces, offering a tangible connection with the extinct megafauna of the Ice Age, without the legal constraints associated with modern ivory.

The woolly mammoth, an iconic giant of the Pleistocene, reigned over the vast cold steppes stretching from Europe to North America. Extinct approximately 4,000 years ago, this massive herbivore, adapted to rigorous climates thanks to its thick fur and fat reserves, coexisted with early modern humans. Its curved tusks, which could reach over three meters, were used as much to clear snow for feeding as to assert dominance.

Each recovered fragment is a precious biological archive, providing insights into a vanished ecosystem. The collection of this fossil ivory, often revealed by the melting permafrost, allows for the preservation of the memory of these titans while offering an ethical and legal alternative to elephant ivory. Possessing such a vestige means holding a share of our planet’s “deep time”.
