This Japanese enamelled plate textiles toyo is an original double-sided advertising sign, probably dating from the mid-twentieth century (Showa era). Made from enamelled sheet metal in a circular shape, it has a characteristic slight convexity and retains a remarkable surface shine. The object features a striking graphic palette dominated by a bright red border and a midnight blue central circle, creating a strong visual contrast typical of manufactured products from this period. Traces of oxidation around the edges and slight chips at the fixing points attest to its past outdoor use.
The central graphic highlights the Toyobo brand's historic logo, featuring a stylised globe with a map of Asia, symbolising the firm's international ambitions. The white lettering, which can be read from right to left in the traditional pre-1945 style, reads "Toyo Boseki" (Toyo Spinning Mill) at the top and "Katan Ito" (Cotton Yarn) at the bottom. This enamelled Japanese plate for Toyo textiles was an essential visual landmark in front of haberdashers and shops selling the brand's products.
In terms of conservation, this collector's item stands out for the quality of its thick enamelling, which has preserved the integrity of the colours despite the decades. The original suspension eyelets are still present, making it easy to mount on any wall. An unusual decorative object steeped in history, it fits perfectly into an industrial, loft or wabi-sabi interior, adding a unique graphic and cultural touch.

Founded in 1882 under the impetus of the visionary industrialist Eiichi Shibusawa, the Toyo Boseki company (known today as Toyobo) was a major pillar of Japan’s industrial modernization during the Meiji era. Born from the strategic merger between Osaka Boseki and Mie Boseki in 1914, the enterprise quickly established itself as one of the most important cotton spinning mills in the world during the interwar period. This textile giant played a decisive role in the economic rise of the Japanese archipelago, exporting its productions massively to Asian and Western markets.
This sign belongs to the golden age of enamel advertising in Japan, a period when large manufacturers competed for visibility in the urban space thanks to these durable and weather-resistant supports. The globe logo is not insignificant: it affirms the firm’s export power at a time when textiles represented the country’s main industrial strength. These advertising objects, called “Horo-kanban”, are today sought-after historical documents, testifying to the commercial dynamism and graphic aesthetic of 20th-century Japan.
