This British Seagull engine is a British-made outboard dating from the 1930s. Nicknamed the "Solex of the seas" because of its mechanical simplicity and reliability, it was named Engine of the Year in 1938. The model was then produced in large quantities to equip the light boats of the British allied armada during the 1944 landings.
The model on display is complete and has been fully restored. It retains its original four-blade propeller, cylindrical copper tank stamped "Seagull", carburettor, throttle handle and drive shaft. The whole thing is presented on a custom-made stand, made up of a brake disc as a base and metal rods that hold the engine in a vertical position, highlighting the exposed mechanics.
This British Seagull engine is a fine example of British marine engineering from the inter-war period, and is ideally suited to decorative use in industrial or maritime interiors.

Founded in 1931 by Bill Pinniger and John Way-Hope, the British Seagull brand produced outboard motors for light boats for nearly seventy years. Designed in Great Britain, these two-stroke engines were known for their simple architecture, ease of repair and resistance to harsh marine conditions.
During the Second World War, the company supplied the British army with engines intended for lifeboats and amphibious operations, notably during the Allied landings in Normandy. After the war, the British Seagull became a standard for fishing, leisure boating and expeditions, before production ceased in 1996. Pre-war models are now sought after by collectors.
