This Les Halles metro enamel sign is an authentic Paris Metro sign, indicating the ‘Les Halles’ station in large white letters on a midnight blue background. Curved in shape, it bears the manufacturer’s mark ‘Email Ed. Jean’ in the bottom right-hand corner, a mark of authenticity for this type of vintage enamel sign. Its generous dimensions of 120 cm make it an imposing piece, typical of mid-20th-century Parisian street furniture.
The enamel retains its beautiful original lustre, with a few slight signs of ageing that attest to its authenticity and actual use in the station. There are no major chips or deep corrosion to impair the legibility or appearance of the plaque. A specimen of this calibre, in this state of preservation and of this size, is now rare to find on the market for Paris Metro enamel plaques.
This Les Halles metro enamel plaque will appeal to collectors of street furniture and Parisian memorabilia, as well as interior designers seeking a striking piece for an industrial or Parisian-style interior. Authentic, signed station plaques, particularly those from iconic stations such as Les Halles, are becoming increasingly rare on the market.

The Les Halles district, long known as “the belly of Paris” in Émile Zola’s phrase, housed the largest food market in the capital for nearly eight centuries, before its transfer to Rungis in 1969. The Les Halles metro station, opened in the early 20th century and considerably expanded with the creation of the Châtelet-Les Halles interchange, became over the decades one of the most heavily used stations on the Paris network, reflecting the historic importance of the neighborhood.
Enameled station plaques such as this one, manufactured by the Établissements Ed. Jean, equipped the platforms and corridors of the Paris metro to guide passengers, in a sober and functional graphic style that has remained virtually unchanged since the network’s earliest days. Now removed during station renovations, these authentic plaques have become highly prized collector’s objects, embodying both the history of the Paris metro and that of the neighborhoods it serves.
Les Halles metro enamel sign, an authentic Paris Metro station sign, domed shape, signed ‘Email Ed. Jean’. Beautiful original lustre, a few slight signs of ageing, 1950, a rare item in collector’s condition.
