This Publiphone PPT rotary-dial telephone is a wall-mounted coin-operated public telephone from the heyday of the French PTT, approximately 70 cm high. Its metallic grey casing houses a mechanical coin mechanism with four slots, marked with orange discs for 5 F, 1 F, 1/2 F and 20 c, as well as four windows for viewing the coins inserted. The black Bakelite handset, held in place by its reinforced metal cord, rests on a side hook, whilst the chrome-plated rotary dial, marked with the numbers 0 to 9, is situated in the bottom left-hand corner. A bilingual French-English instruction plate completes the front panel.
The telephone is presented in collector’s condition, with its complete housing, legible original plates, intact handset and complete rotary dial. The surfaces retain their original grey finish and the orange dots still shine brightly. A wall-mounted public telephone of this generation, complete with handset, cord and dial, is increasingly sought after now that telephone boxes and coin-operated phones have disappeared from public spaces.
This Publiphone PPT rotary-dial telephone will appeal to collectors of vintage telephones, those nostalgic for 1970s and 1980s France, and enthusiasts of vintage décor or themed bars. Mounted on the wall of a living room, office or shop, it adds a retro and welcoming touch, evoking the days when people would slot in franc coins to make a call.

Until the 1980s, the coin-operated public telephone was an essential fixture of daily life in France, installed in cafés, railway stations, post offices and street kiosks. Managed by the PTT (Postes, Télégraphes et Téléphones), the public payphone network expanded significantly in the post-war years to meet growing demand for communications, with robust devices designed to withstand intensive use.
Models with mechanical coin mechanisms, recognisable by their slots for 5 F, 1 F, ½ F and 20-centime coins, operated with rotary dials and Bakelite handsets. From the late 1980s onwards, the arrival of the Télécarte phonecard and then the mobile phone rendered them progressively obsolete. Retired from service today, these payphones have become sought-after collector’s items, symbols of an era when the public telephone punctuated the rhythm of everyday life.
