This glass electrical insulator is a high-voltage line component made from thick moulded glass, in a superb translucent green-blue hue. Its distinctive three-tiered shape, comprising a wide upper disc, an intermediate ring and a flared base, is topped by a head with a groove for securing the conductor. Measuring approximately 25 x 25 cm and weighing 5 kg, it reflects light with beautiful plays of transparency within the mass of the glass.
The insulator is presented in its original condition, with its patina from use and the natural lustre of the glass, without any major chips or damage that would detract from its appearance. This type of item, used by EDF on the pylons of the French electricity grid, was mass-produced but is rarely preserved in such a beautiful colour and with such thickness.
This glass electrical insulator will appeal to collectors of industrial objects, enthusiasts of loft and industrial-style décor, as well as interior designers who enjoy repurposing everyday objects. Placed on a shelf, on a desk, or repurposed as a lamp base or paperweight, it adds a striking, colourful touch to any interior.

In overhead power lines, the insulator’s function is to hold the conducting cables at height while electrically isolating them from the metal pylons. For much of the 20th century, toughened and moulded glass was widely used to manufacture these components, valued for its mechanical strength, controlled cost, and the ease of visually identifying a damaged element.
With the development of France’s national electricity network after the Second World War, millions of insulators of this type were installed by EDF on medium and high-voltage lines. Gradually replaced by ceramic and then composite material models, these glass insulators — in a range of colours from green to blue — are today sought after by collectors and repurposed as decorative objects, witnesses to the country’s industrial and energy history.
