The Hockenheim circuit, located near Heidelberg in Germany, is one of the historic temples of European motor racing. Inaugurated in 1932 and substantially reshaped following the tragic death of Jim Clark in 1968 during a Formula 2 race on its long, tree-lined straights, the track has hosted the German Formula 1 Grand Prix almost continuously since the 1970s. Its layout, combining long straights through the Hockenheim forest with a tight final stadium section, makes it a demanding circuit in terms of aerodynamics and engine performance, particularly suited to private team testing in pursuit of pure performance.
In July 1991, Ayrton Senna was in the midst of a title-defending season at the wheel of the McLaren-Honda MP4/6, which he would go on to drive to his third world championship that year. The private testing sessions organized by McLaren at Hockenheim ahead of the German Grand Prix were part of the relentless pursuit of optimization characteristic of the Honda-McLaren team at its peak. These off-track moments, away from the media pressure of Grand Prix weekends, gave photographers with privileged access rare and authentic images of a driver in deep concentration — images now carefully preserved as testimony to that golden era of Formula 1.
