This Michelin Bibendum mascot is an authentic 40 cm lorry ornament, depicting the famous reclining Michelin Man, with his legs crossed, one hand resting on his chest and the other on his thigh, wearing his round glasses and a yellow scarf bearing the inscription ‘MICHELIN’. It comes with its original mounting bracket, allowing it to be fitted, just as in the day, on the roof of a cab, and bears the Michelin markings on the back, a guarantee of authenticity.

The item displays a magnificent patina and is in impeccable overall condition for an object over sixty years old that has been used outdoors: the plastic retains its original white colour, the moulded details remain sharp and the letters on the scarf are still legible. A mascot complete with its original mounting bracket, in such a state of preservation, is rare on the market for automotive promotional items.

This Michelin Bibendum mascot will appeal to collectors of promotional items, enthusiasts of heavy goods vehicles and classic cars, as well as those passionate about decorating garages, workshops or offices. It can still be seen today on certain lorries driven by purists, which testifies to the fondness for these iconic items.

Born in 1898 from an idea by brothers André and Édouard Michelin, who saw in a stack of tires the image of a figure, the Bibendum was drawn by the poster artist O’Galop and became one of the oldest and most recognized advertising mascots in the world. His body made of stacked tires — originally white, as tires of the era were that color — has accompanied the Clermont-Ferrand brand for more than a century on posters, roads, and competitions.

From the 1950s and 1960s onward, the Bibendum appeared in three dimensions on Michelin fleet trucks, in the form of mascots fixed to the top of cabs, becoming a familiar landmark on the roads of France and Europe. These ornaments, designed to withstand weather and vibration, have today become sought-after collector’s objects, symbols of the golden age of road transport and automotive advertising.
